Description

Long time no post! I've been very busy, and while I haven't been not drawing, everything personal I've done has fallen into the 'sketch' category. Here, however, is a selection of illustrations I did for my birthday.

I'm not at all a party person, but apparently it is near a sin not to have a party for a 21st birthday, so these pictures were all done to decorate things like invitations, an 'autograph' book and thankyou cards. I wanted something personal, and a bit retro, to add a little fun to what was essentially a quiet family-and-family-friend afternoon tea. And anyway, what's the use of a BA in Illustration if I can't design my own stationary? =P

Said party was on the 10th, but I actually turn 21 on the thirteenth, so I'm posting these now, as a sort of celebration. =) I'm rather fond of all these images.

The style is based on a series of advertisements from the early 50s (for zippers, actually) - some of the images are based on those, but the majority are done from scratch. You can see two sketches done from those ads ages ago here: [link] . And they're all printed on a specialty paper, which has been scanned in to give the off-white background here. In real life the effect is a little more subtle, though.
Inking done by hand with Artline Drawing System pens, colour in Photoshop CS, pattern from [link]

Enjoy! =D

Lovely--and belated happy birthday! :D

(And it is indeed, near a sin, not to celebrate your 21st with a party! I got around it because I had 3 housemates, at the time of mine...and since two of us turned 21 the same month, and between the three of us we went to one performing arts university, one state uni, and worked at Sea World, flyers were posted all over the place, and my housemates had THEIR big, noisy, party, and I stayed in my room, playing showtunes by candlelight, with a game of Pictionary out, and my friends came in and visited me throughout the evening, and we alternated games of Pictionary, with singing and acting out showtunes. I can't say it was quiet...but it was fun, and I avoided having to do any "partying" myself! ;))
