Little Red Riding Hood by Alene Little Red Riding Hood by Alene
Her grandmother, who loved her more than anyone, made her a little cap of red velvet that suited her so well that she wanted to wear it all the time.

I did this illustration in response to the SCBWI Tomie de Paola award prompt. It gave me a nice new piece for my portfolio.

:star: For more information, including a process animation showing how this piece came together, head over to my blog: alene-art.blogspot.com.au/2016…

Media: FW Acrylic ink and Winsor & Newton watercolours on Moleskine watercolour paper.
Size: 8x8"
Time Taken: ~25 hours
References: Pose references my own. I did google searches for medieval cottages to see what went into them.

Enjoy! =D

Acrylic ink-- how awesome! I love the delicate colors, and all the research you did on the interiors. Great work.

Thanks! =D The ink is mainly for the outlines, so I can paint over them (and then touch them up and add a few darker shadows when I'm done with the watercolour =P) Delicate colours are more of a struggle for me, but I'm always happy when I pull them off! Thanks so much for the :+fav: too!

I spent about five minutes just admiring all the little details that add so much to the cozy, day-in-the-life feeling of the cottage-- like the drying herbs and that big loom in the back.  Also love the wool and doll on the floor, abandoned as she leapt up from the pillow to hug her grandmother.  So sweet! :)

What a lovely comment, thank you! I really wanted to give as many details as possible about Little Red's life within the illustration, which is where there is the most scope for experimentation with the story, I think. I decided that her Grandmother weaves cloth for a living, and naturally Little Red would help - and it was a lot of fun researching medieval cottages and everything that went into them! =D

Thank you! I think atmosphere is one of the hardest things to get right in illustration - I love experimenting and seeing what I can come up with!
